Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement (TTMRA) Pathway to CPEng
If you're currently a registered professional engineer in Australia, you may be eligible to apply for registration as a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) in Aotearoa New Zealand through the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement (TTMRA). This agreement makes it simpler for Australian engineers to have their professional registration recognised in New Zealand.
Who can apply?
You can apply under the TTMRA pathway if you:
-
hold a current, verifiable licence/registration in good standing as a professional engineer with an Australian statutory registration authority with no conditions/limitations, and
-
are applying in a comparable practice field (e.g., fire, electrical, mechanical, etc.).
We will require evidence of your registration status and confirmation of good standing with your Australian registration authority.
You cannot apply under the TTMRA pathway if:
-
your registration has been cancelled, suspended or removed in New Zealand or any other participating jurisdiction.
-
you are currently subject to any disciplinary proceedings or preliminary investigations that may lead to disciplinary action
-
you are personally prohibited from practising, or subject to special conditions due to criminal, civil or disciplinary matters in any participating jurisdiction.
All applicants are required to complete a statutory declaration confirming that none of the above circumstances apply. Making a false or misleading declaration is a serious offence and may lead to your application being refused, cancelled or referred for investigation.
How to apply
Step 1: Create an account
If you do not have an online account with us, you will first need to sign up for an account here, and complete your profile including your address.
Step 2: Complete the form and upload to your account
Next, you will need to download and complete the TTMRA application form, gather your supporting documents and load this into the ‘Credentials’ area of your account. To add this, go to: Menu > Career > Credentials > Other credentials.
Step 3: Request a TTRMA assessment and pay the fee
Once your form and related documentation has been uploaded to your account, contact the Registrar to request a TTMRA check at Registrar@engineeringnz.org. You will receive an invoice and will need to pay for this before we can begin processing your application.
What happens next?
Once we’ve received your application, we’ll:
-
confirm your eligibility under the TTMRA
-
verify your current registration status with your Australian registration authority
-
contact you if we need clarification on your application.
If your application is approved, we’ll add you to the CPEng register and send you a confirmation of your registration, together with your practising certificate.
