Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng)

When you apply to become a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) you can also apply for Professional Membership of IPENZ

Chartered Professional Engineers have access to three other Registers

What is a Chartered Professional Engineer?

If you’re a Chartered Professional Engineer you’ll:

  • Deal with complex engineering problems and activities requiring the application of specialist engineering knowledge and work from first principles
  • Have a Washington Accord-accredited qualification (a four-year Bachelor of Engineering, Honours) or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge.

How to become a Chartered Professional Engineer

You need to demonstrate your competence for independent practice against our competence standard for professional engineers.

Continued Registration

You need to pay an annual registration fee and demonstrate you still meet the standard for a Chartered Professional Engineer. This will happen at least every six years – your most recent assessment will determine how long until your next one.

How to Apply

You can apply to be registered or reassessed as a Chartered Professional Engineer in our Customer Area

IPENZ Members already have access to the Customer Area. If you’re not already a Member, apply to become one or ask for temporary access
